Council of Nordic Trade Unions
Umbrella organisation for the trade unions in the Nordic countries.
The Nordic trade unions have a long tradition of co-operation, starting already in the 19th century. The trade union pioneers in the Nordic countries supported each other in their early attempts to build trade unions. For a long time their co-operation was informal but in the beginning of the 1970’s it was organised in a more formal manner.
The Council of Nordic Trade Unions (NFS) was established in 1972 as an umbrella organisation for the trade unions in the Nordic countries. Its member organisations consist of blue collar, white collar and academic national trade unions in Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Greenland, Norway and Sweden. All together they organise more than 9 million members, representing about two thirds of the total Nordic labour force.
The main task of NFS is to co-ordinate trade union activities in the Nordic countries, particularly with regard to employment, economic policy and different social issues. NFS also actively represents its member organisations in different international organizations. It has status of an observer in ETUC, TUAC and ICFTU. The NFS member organisations, having direct membership in these organisations, jointly propose candidates to Executive Boards and different committees.
NFS is headed by an Executive Board, consisting of representatives from all the member organisation.
The daily business is handled by the Secretariat, i.e. the General Secretary and his staff. The Secretariat is situated in Stockholm.
